Careless Ease_ Any Vacancy?
Has anybody ever told you this before- an idle mind is the devil's
workshop? Or, perhaps, you have ever said that to a dear one. Usually, we quote
this to people we would want to wish well, because we know that idleness breeds
no good results.
It is prone to happen everywhere, in the bus, lecture hall, home,
church, workplace, closet, just name it, idleness comes to us as long as we
entertain it. In this era of sexual revolution, everything matters; from what
we are doing and even more importantly to what we are not doing. Sexually explicit
content, nudity, and other uncalled for contents are craving attention from us.
Even time designated for relevant activities are been invaded by the media, how
much more the time scheduled for nothing?
The old English proverb; an idle mind is the devil's workshop, has
been quoted over and over to kick out laziness from some folks. The same adage
speaks to a number of issues including sexual purity. Need I reecho that the
proverb means exactly what it says? Oh yes, it does! An idle mind is a
perfect hub for unnecessary thoughts. A workshop is a creative environment or condition for the
production of goods and services. Such is the mind, it is made to be
productive.
Once in a while you may have an idle time, but it is grave if you
have an idle mind. An idle mind is an inactive mind at a particular instance.
Basically, nothing significant is going on in such a mind at a given moment. In
such instance, like some youngsters say, "everything goes". Meaning, you are free and available for almost everything.
Considering the patterns of destruction now, you are prone to the works of the
flesh more when you remain idle. Idleness is a strong weapon of the enemy.
After recently listening to a number of people with various sexually
immoral habits, the common denominator to the progress of these perverseness is
idleness. They narrate how they silently crept back in secrecy to their
"old lives" whenever they were idle. That's because anytime a person is
idle, there is an open invitation to anything to occupy time, and thoughts.
Ezekiel 16:49 KJV "Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride,
fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her
daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and
needy."
We are not ignorant of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, how that
they greatly sinned against God with all manners of lusts and unrighteousness.
Thankfully, scripture does not leave us to make a wide guess of contributions
to their fall. Abundance of idleness as the Scriptures puts it, was a
factor. Idleness is a deadly state to be in but it is often overlooked by
most people. It's like an invitation to all manner of thoughts and activities
especially from the devil. The "I-promise- never-to-do-it-again"
folks usually turn back whenever they reach this point. It is like a point of
no return. We should never underestimate the power and role idleness plays in
sexual immorality.
Anytime you are idle, you become vulnerable to sexual immorality
because the contents are all over the place seeking you more than you know. If
you've ever caught a glimpse of a scene or two of nudity or any sexually
provocative image, the state of idleness becomes an opportune time to refresh
those scenes in your memory. Largely, this happens because there is a high
tendency to muse on them in idleness. The enemy is always seeking a place where
there's an abundance of idleness to operate.
If you are seeking to quit any sexually immoral behavior then take
a second look at this. Perhaps, it's recurring because there is an abundance of
idleness in your life. Now, if you are also aiming at refraining addiction and
sexual immorality then you equally need to pay attention to the subject of
idleness.
So I ask, is there any space for lustful thoughts and sexually
immoral desires in your life? Let that space be occupied with studies, prayer
and other activities that will add value to your life. Don't entertain
idleness, lest your mind becomes the devil's workshop for unwarranted thoughts.
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a
roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" ~1 Peter 5:8. Even the devil is
not idle so why entertain idleness? In our quest to occupy ourselves in
order not to give any vacancy to lusts, let us also be mindful of what/who we
occupy ourselves with. Occupy yourself with people who call on God from a pure
heart, and things that will add value to your life. That is what you need.
