Lust is Selling
"There is no disease as destructive as lust" – Chanakya
Lust is a human weakness that derails momentum, disrupts progress and even destroys your God-given assignment, bringing shame and disgrace to you.
This week, I want us to talk about lust. Some may ask “So what’s the problem with lust?” After all, it is all around us, in songs, movies, advertisements, etc. That is the reason why we should get to a deeper knowledge of what lust really is.
We can all recount stories of people who have got into trouble because of lust – church leaders who have experienced ‘moral failure’; parents who have got divorced; the friend hooked on porn. We’ve all read the books, blogs, and articles warning us against the dangers of lust. And we are all confronted each day by a multitude of images and scenarios that can provoke us to lust. How does a faithful believer quest for purity in a world that makes it incredibly difficult?
I've been following an alleged story about a Nigerian pastor who is accused of rape and other sexual sins which happened 17 years ago. Thus, in his early days. In as much as I wish this were not true, it has really heightened my sense of holy living for all children of destiny.
Lust is such a strong and subversive force that it can be tough to see through it or see it through. Lust is so powerful a force that it is often beyond the power of reason to contain. It suppresses wisdom and might if it is not dealt with. If lust can so overcome sense, just think what it could do to a young one like you.
Going down memory lane, from the Bible to History, we have come to hear of great men who had difficulty executing their God giving purpose because of lust.
Before I go any further, if you have any form of ungodly desire, which is a nature of lust in your heart; it is the first thing you must admit, even if no one knows, God does; otherwise this article will be useless to you. If you can't admit that you have a problem of lust; it means you're not ready for healing. Do the right thing; God has a remedy!
Sad, but let’s all admit it, lust is selling. Lust sells because it appeals to the dark side of us that only wants to get. No amount of religiosity or spirituality can hide the pressure and weight that lust brings; this is a truth we must uncomfortably swallow. Just like love is patient, lust can also wait to get hold of you, turn you into a liar, deceiver, and manipulator who act towards others based on the desire to get. Like a junkie will do about anything to get his fix, so someone steeped in lust will do about anything to be self-gratified
In today’s modern day, millennial dating world and pornified culture it is challenging to talk about this without getting someone offended, yet a lot of us wrestle with sexual temptations to a higher degree, and we hide it under a modernised term ‘dating'.
Lust has subdued the strength of many young men; enticed destinies to anarchy, shattered the fates of the ignorant and arrested the progress of the disobedient.
Lust is a question of the affections – a matter of love. Aquinas put it this way: "Man cannot live without joy; therefore, when he is deprived of true spiritual joy, he becomes addicted to carnal pleasures." If we are not living in the Father's love, lust will fill the vacuum. Aquinas makes it binary: God's love, or lust. Like all the deadly sins, lust is often subtle and insidious. It is always crouching, ready to pounce, to get us when we least expect it.
Accountability can help. Support groups can help. Learning to keep our spiritual armour permanently on certainly helps (Eph. 6:10-18). In the end, though, as with all the deadly sins, we will only walk free of lust when we are walking in love with God. Aquinas was right, we need joy – and Jesus promises it to us, a pleasure that offers more than the addiction of sensual pleasures.
Pray against lustful desires as if your life depended on it, and sure it does, for we believe in your future! For help and counselling on any sexual issue email us on seperatedyoungsters@gmail.com
